Sunbury Manor School
The McAvoy Group has delivered a £3.3m scheme for Surrey County Council at Sunbury Manor School in Sunbury-on-Thames. This project brings the value of offsite education projects awarded under the Southern Modular Building Framework to £15m.
Designed in collaboration with TODD Architects, the new teaching and dining block will allow the school to expand capacity by up to 150 children to meet the urgent demand for new secondary places in Surrey.
- Facility New teaching and dining block
- Building Size 1200m2
- Location Sunbury-on-Thames
- Time On Site Less than 9 months
- Partners TODD Architects
The Offsite Solution
McAvoy installed 44 steel-framed modules at Sunbury Manor in just five days, complete with 75 per cent of mechanical and electrical services, internal partitioning and brick cladding fitted out in the factory. Following completion of the new building, the McAvoy team undertook refurbishment works in the main school which included upgrading some classrooms to science laboratories.
A Highly Constrained, Fully Operational School Site
By reducing the build programme to less than nine months, there was much less disruption to the staff and children. McAvoy had to work on a highly constrained, fully operational site in the heart of the school and in close proximity to the two main buildings.
Careful planning and management of logistics were key to managing the entrance to the site which was shared with the adjacent leisure centre and located in a residential area.
Best Practice in Site Management
The scheme, which is finished in brick and vertical cedar cladding to complement the academy’s existing buildings, accommodates five general classrooms, a staff room and new commercial kitchen and dining facilities to cater for around 900 children each day. Delivered on time, it was built offsite and under the Considerate Constructors Scheme, which awarded a high score to the McAvoy project team for best practice.
Proven Track Record
McAvoy has a proven track record in education, particularly in the South East, having successfully delivered many contracts for Surrey County Council.
The Group has been awarded building projects under the Southern Modular Building Framework worth around £15m – from nursery blocks to self-contained primary and secondary school buildings. Its offsite solutions aim to deliver rapid building solutions to meet the rising demand for school places, working to the highest health and safety standards.
The Customer Perspective
“The school is delighted with the form and function of the building which has been well received and has delivered their vision for the facility. The new hall and kitchen have provided a paradigm leap in the dining experience for the school.”
“Offsite construction delivers a shorter programme on site than with traditional build. This is beneficial to minimising the impact of construction on teaching.”
“The school’s relationship with McAvoy from the outset was very positive and we appreciated one point of contact. We were able to have significant input in the project within the budget constraints, and communications were excellent at each stage. We are happy with the end result, the speed of construction and the lack of disruption. We were also very impressed with how McAvoy left the school site at the end of the project. You would never know there had been a temporary haulage road through the school.”
