Reporting to the Head of Design & Technical Services the Design Manager will be responsible for ensuring that the all aspects of project delivery fully comply with Employer’s Requirements, Contractor’s Proposals and relevant regulations and industry standards. This will involve working closely with internal and external teams including the supply chain to ensure full compliance at all times so as to assist in optimizing performance and consistently deliver a high-quality product both in the manufacturing facility and on site. The Design Manager will ensure that the project KPIs are met or exceeded. This important role will also require effective leadership and engagement with all levels of internal management. The Design Manager must have sound professional credentials, have experience in a relevant organisation and have a strong desire to pursue best in class outcomes.

Main Duties & Accountabilities

  • To manage all aspects of design from inception to completion for a national Design and Build Contractor. Design will be completed by both internal designers and external design consultants.
  • Work closely with the Manufacturing and Delivery teams and strive towards delivering all projects to a high quality and within budget
  • Manage both internal and external design resource across multiple projects
  • Ensure all designs are developed in line with DfMA principals.
  • Review design information in accordance with Building Regulations, Employers’ Requirements, independent quality assurance, CDM, BSA and all statutory bodies.
  • Create and manage design programmes, consultant scope documents, Design responsibility matrix, derogation schedules, risk register, progress trackers and design reports to the successful completion of the project.

Person Specification

  • Possess a 3rd level qualification:  eg BSc Architectural Technology, BSc Architecture, HND Building Studies or equivalent with complementary industry experience
  • Professional membership, eg CIAT, CIOB, RIBA is desirable
  • Strong technical skills and knowledge with a high attention to details –
  • Knowledge of BIM, BREEAM and use of Procore CDE and Construction Management software would be beneficial
  • Demonstrate sound project management skills
  • Candidates must have a detailed working knowledge of all current Building Regulations and the new Building Safety Act, its implications across all projects and the principal designer role.
  • Working knowledge and experience of the CDM 2015 regulations and the duties of the principal designer and principal contractor.
  • Be able to demonstrate strong commercial acumen
  • A mentor and coach who can share knowledge, advise, support and help develop a team of young designers and design managers / coordinators.
  • Sector related experience in education and/or healthcare and/or commercial (desirable)
