Project Summary

Thorp Academy required temporary classroom accommodation while their existing school facilities underwent extensive extensions. The decant solution provided a seamless and efficient way to ensure uninterrupted learning for students during the construction of an extension to the existing school.

McAvoy was awarded the contract due to demonstrating the ability to meet the client’s requirements and deliver a high-quality rental solution rapidly.

The Rental Solution

Utilising our SmartClass® solution, the temporary modular building includes 4 spacious open-plan classrooms – each approximately 60m2, electric heating, lighting and power points and vinyl flooring.

The temporary modular solution was chosen for its rapid delivery and minimal disruption. Installation took place during the summer holidays to ensure there was no interruption during term time, and the project was completed before the new school term began. The modules have been designed to serve as interim facilities to support the school whilst works on the existing school are taking place.

McAvoy’s rental solution provided the school with a flexible, cost-effective solution without the need for capital expenditure. The rental model also takes away the burden of maintenance from the school, as all maintenance is managed by McAvoy. At the end of the rental period McAvoy will remove the classrooms and repurpose for the next use, enhancing the sustainability of the solution.

Key Challenges

Delivering the project required careful planning to address several challenges:

  • Site restriction: Limited space and challenging access required precise adjustments, including kerb modifications and careful crane positioning for module installation.
  • Safety Considerations: Ensuring safe walking routes for students and staff was a top priority. Pathways and security fencing were strategically installed to avoid interaction with the ongoing construction works at the existing school.
  • Proximity to existing school: The modular units were positioned close to the most accessible part of the school building to enhance accessibility and minimise disruption.

Outcome

McAvoy successfully delivered and installed the modular classrooms on time and within budget, providing a high-quality rental solution for Thorp Academy. The project demonstrated McAvoy’s ability to adapt to site-specific challenges and deliver tailored modular solutions efficiently to the customer’s satisfaction.
