McAvoy Wins Contract for Terminal 2 at Dublin Airport

McAvoy Off-Site Building Solutions has been awarded a multi-million euro contract to provide modular buildings for the development of Terminal 2 (T2), the second passenger terminal, at Dublin International Airport. It is the company’s second major contract at the international airport.

Dublin Airport Authority announced the award to McAvoy as part of a series of contracts worth around €200 million to cover key elements in the construction of the new terminal, an integral part of plans to transform Ireland’s primary international gateway to meet an expected substantial growth in passengers. It follows a competitive tendering process.

The Project
Temporary accommodation was required during the construction work on the planned Terminal 2 at Dublin International Airport to facilitate a speedy start of construction work on the project.

McAvoy Solution
McAvoy will manufacture 100 steel-framed, modular units at its Dungannon factory, transport them to the airport and then assemble on-site to provide quality accommodation for contractors, workers, security staff and for the storage of materials during the construction of the new terminal buildings. This will include specialist security entry units with ‘eye’ recognition software and automated turnstiles to cope with up to 2,000 workers at its peak entering the construction site daily. Security control accommodation will also be provided.

McAvoy will also provide canteens within the three-storey office blocks to be operated by a specialist logistics company.

The contract requires the first units to be delivered during October, when site clearance and construction work will begin, for completion by the end of next March. McAvoy Off-site also provided modular units for temporary boarding gates at the airport.

The construction of T2 and the planned new runway are part of the DAA’s €2 billion ‘Transforming Dublin Airport’ programme. This 10-year programme also includes new boarding gates, an extension to the existing terminal, and a wide range of other upgrades that will expand, improve and modernise Dublin Airport.

Construction of the new terminal will be completed towards the end of 2009. Following a rigorous testing and commissioning phase, T2 will open in April 2010.
