Apprentice success at McAvoy

SERC Skillbuild

Two apprentices from The McAvoy Group are celebrating success in the South Eastern Regional College’s (SERC) annual inter-campus Skillbuild competition.

Twin brothers Ryan and Nathan Fitzsimmons, currently completing their joinery apprenticeship at McAvoy, achieved first and second place respectively in the carpentry category.

Held at the SERC Lisburn campus, the event is designed to test and challenge the ability of apprentices working in the construction trades including, joinery, plastering and carpentry. The test pieces challenge the ability of apprentices to follow detailed instructions, test skills within tight timeframes, and produce neat and accurate work.

Both Ryan and Nathan are now through to the NI Regional Skill Build competition on 23rd March 2018, where they will represent SERC at the Skillbuild NI Regional Finals. There is potential for winners to progress further to represent Northern Ireland in the Skills Show UK and at World Skills level.

Many congratulations to Ryan and Nathan on their success, and the very best of luck in the next stage of the competition.
